Deliberation:
During my time in Rhetoric & Civic Life 138H, I learned how to differentiate between a deliberation and a debate. A deliberation’s goal is not necessarily to come to an agreement, but to come to an understanding of why some people feel the way they do. Deliberations value all aspects and views from the community, which is why my class held a deliberation in State College. We explored the topic of inclusive diversity on college campuses, and I was in charge of constructing our packet, which is included below. Through the deliberation, I learned to value others’ opinions and to look out for community members who are not heard from.

Issue Brief:
Gaining and building upon rhetorical skills was an objective of both Rhetoric & Civic Life 137H and 138H. Towards the end of Rhetoric & Civic Life 138H, the skills my peers and I acquired were put to the test when writing an issue brief. This policy-oriented paper needed an audience with an active voice, extensive research, and infographics to support one’s position. I wrote about the Yulin Dog Festival with the intended audience being the Chinese Embassy and the National People’s Congress of China. The obstacle I faced while working on this piece was writing without language that could come off as offensive. I believe I did so efficiently by proofreading extensively and checking in with others. Overall, I am very proud of this piece and that I was able to have peers sign the petition against Yulin.

Blogging:
Blogging was a weekly component of Rhetoric & Civic Life 138H, which I appreciated because I was constantly working on my writing skills. My class was able to choose the topics of our blogs, so I did not mind the research or work. For my Passion Blog, I wrote each week about a different Netflix show that had caught my attention. I included television shows of many genres, and focused on the different audiences I had at hand. For my Civic Issues Blog, I spent my time researching and writing about energy. I find the topic of energy to be crucial, however, it is not always interesting to all. For this reason, I included topics which others might find intriguing, such as the economy.
